Time for Game Day

Normally I hate standard because there are a dozen good decks which the pros play.  Add in the fact that the random scrubs play the craziest decks that you have 25% against.  You have the choice to either tweak the deck against the best decks or vs trash and whichever way you choose it’ll be the wrong decision.

With Game Day, at least the prizes are at least worth playing for.  Not only do you get the normal prize packs, but T8 usually gets some interesting (or at least tradable) foil rare.

Goblin Diplomats is not all that exciting.  A 2/1 Goblin with a non-relevant ability, not so interesting (the picture looks sweet).

The promo common is much more interesting to me.  I doubt that Hive Stirrings will be playable, but it’s still a card that intrigues me (I love slivers).  I’m not a huge fan of the picture, but at least they look like old style slivers instead of the new age ones.

As to what I’m planning on playing, I’m looking at Golgari Control.  Likely, I’ll run the list below with a few tweaks that was posted by Jeff Hoogland and passed along to me by my friend John Galli (of reddeckwinning.com/ fame):

1x Forest
2x Golgari Guildgate
2x Mutavault
4x Overgrown Tomb
13x Swamp
4x Woodland CemeterySorcery (3)
3x Mutilate

Enchantment (3)
3x Underworld Connections

Artifact (1)
1x Ratchet Bomb

Planeswalker (3)

3x Liliana of the Veil

Instant (8)
3x Abrupt Decay
1x Devour Flesh
1x Doom Blade
1x Putrefy
2x Tragic Slip

Creature (16)
4x Desecration Demon
1x Disciple of Bolas
4x Lifebane Zombie
3x Scavenging Ooze
4x Thragtusk

Sideboard (15)
2x Deathrite Shaman
2x Doom Blade
3x Duress
2x Golgari Charm
1x Liliana of the Veil
1x Mutilate
1x Pithing Needle
1x Putrefy
1x Scavenging Ooze
1x Vraska the Unseen

I think some numbers may be off (the singleton forest gets turned into a swamp and the Disciple of Bolas gets increased to two are my immediate reaction) but it’s very close to what I want to be playing.  It has answers to everything and is very hard to get color screwed (or mana screwed in general).  Plus the creatures give you raw power very few decks have.

I do need to purchase more Lifebane Zombies, Scavenging Oozes and Mutavaults to make the deck.  I was going to pick up my playset of Mutavaults soon along with my 4th Scavenging Ooze soon anyway so those don’t bother me.  The Lifebane Zombie is ridiculously expensive for what it is (how is it $8 on TCG player?).  Luckily, I’m in at the shop tonight for draft and I’ll hopefully pick up what I need (else I’ll order it online and get it by the weekend).

Hopefully I’ll have a few tournament reports come next week 🙂
